Sif had worked hard enough in the training area to break a sweat, which was rare for her and felt nice. She stepped off the elevator and into a rush of blessedly cool breeze that unstuck damp flyaway bits of her hair from her face and made her close her eyes in pleasure. Once she had asked Jarvis and he'd explained that he was regulating the temperature of the air in different rooms, something that had never been an issue in the halls and palaces of Asgard.
She opened her eyes in time to find her way into the kitchen and stop in front of the refrigerator, her hand rubbing at the back of her neck as she surveyed its contents and tried ignore the feeling that she was imposing--food kept appearing here and she kept eating it, yet did not feel as if she was contributing to much of anything so far. Loki was almost too calm, and there wasn't much to do but watch Thor worry for him, and wait. For what, she didn't know.
Making a frustrated noise, Sif pulled out some meat and bread, some green things and some sort of dressings for a sandwich, then plopped it all on the counter. She could not make anything else for herself, and missed the great feasts on Asgard. For a moment it made her long to see Volstagg and Hogun and Fandral again, even if it was to watch them throw food at each other. She'd never felt as if she didn't fit.
She stacked meat and vegetables as high as she dared as her stomach growled and she resisted the urge to kick off her too-new athletic shoes in a way that would be unbecoming of a guest. Instead she wriggled her toes where she stood and fished into a jar of mayonnaise.

Date: 2012-08-22 11:41 pm (UTC)By lunch time, he was hungry, and he didn't have what he was craving in his kitchen. Fortunately, he'd picked up some familiar things during his grocery shopping adventure over the weekend. He grabbed his sketchbook, just in case he got inspired and wanted to doodle during lunch, and headed to the common area kitchen. When he got there, he saw an unfamiliar woman standing at the counter making a sandwich. She wasn't someone he recognized from S.H.I.E.L.D., so he thought she was either Thor's ladyfriend or a stranger.
"Hello," he greeted, looking around the kitchen and finding the most usable weapons so he would be prepared if she was a stranger with a bad agenda. "That's some sandwich you've made."

Date: 2012-08-22 11:52 pm (UTC)"As long as I can get my mouth around it," she acknowledged with a glance at her sandwich, "I've been known not to think ahead." She smiled at him, welcoming the distraction of company. "Hello. You must be...actually I've no idea who you must be. I'm Sif. Lady Sif, of Asgard." She stuck her hand out.

Date: 2012-08-23 12:01 am (UTC)He relaxed now that he'd identified her as safe, and crossed over to the pantry so he could start gathering ingredients for his lunch. There was a risk that something might have been eaten, since he hadn't thought to label it, but it was all still there. "If the sandwich isn't enough, I'll probably have extra of what I'm making," he offered. He read the directions for the Kraft Mac n Cheese in case they had changed, then he did the same for the Spam. Content that he knew enough to fix this meal on his own, he went to work putting the mac n cheese together then opened the spam and began to cut it into cubes. He got a tomato, an onion, and the bag of Fritos ready to add in when he was ready for them.

Date: 2012-08-23 12:31 am (UTC)If her appetite was like Thor's, she would need more than just a sandwich. He'd use the entire box of mac n cheese and can of Spam, he decided, so there'd be more than enough. "This is something I used to eat a lot when I was younger. It's made from cheap stuff, so I could afford it without needing much money. It's going to be mac n cheese with other stuff mixed in it. It's a hearty meal. Cooking isn't something I've had a chance to do much of, but I'm enjoying the opportunity to do it more now."

Date: 2012-08-23 12:46 am (UTC)Sif eyed the ingredients again as he spoke. "I've just realized I can't afford anything here," she admitted, half to herself. She hadn't wanted for anything at home, even though her station had been lower than Thor's. She reached for the can of meat. "Can I help? I handled more weapons than pots and pans, growing up, but maybe I can be useful, especially if anything requires knives."

Date: 2012-08-23 12:53 am (UTC)"I'm sure we can take care of anything you wish to buy while here. I was given an account with a whacky amount of money in it, something about being paid for years I was presumed dead." Steve didn't know if there was any truth in that, but it was nice to actually have money to spend after an entire life of never having enough. He was trying to get better about actually using the money, too. "I need to cut the tomatoes and onions into small squares. Do you dice things on Asgard?" He handed the two items over to her. "There's a knife in that drawer. Be careful, it's pretty sharp."

Date: 2012-08-23 01:07 am (UTC)Sif nodded. "The tower is very well-appointed, I've been able to find everything I need," she agreed, even though it made her slightly uncomfortable. She took the vegetables from Steve and placed them in front of her, smirking a little. "You could say I've diced things. Not so much in a cooking capacity, but." She withdrew the knife and pressed the tip of it testingly against her fingertip in a way she was used to doing with her blades. "Sharp enough, I'd say. Why were you presumed dead, were you lost?"

Date: 2012-08-23 01:23 am (UTC)"Warrior, huh? That's not surprising," he decided, knowing from what he'd read about Thor that the other man was a big time warrior back home. "Are knives your specialty? Or swords? I guess you can just pretend the vegetables are people's, uh, heads?" He wasn't sure what they diced on Asgard that made her smirk that way, but it probably involved blood. He smiled and nodded. "Yeah, I was lost. Short story is I crashed a plane to save a bunch of people, landed in ice, was frozen until a little over a month ago. Now, I'm thawed and not quite so lost. Are you just visiting Thor or do you plan to stay awhile?"
no subject
Date: 2012-08-23 01:42 am (UTC)"Swords and daggers." She nodded, then laughed. "An interesting visual--I think I can turn off my bloodlust long enough to cut vegetables though. Maybe." She got to it as Steve told her his story. Her stomach rumbled again but she wanted to keep cooking, so she stole a bit of meat off her sandwich and munched as she returned to chopping. "You seem thawed enough. And as for being lost, at least you know your way around a kitchen better than I do. Around Earth, for that matter."
"I'm not sure how long I'll stay. Until I'm needed back home, I suppose. It just seemed right to be here, for now, and help Thor."
no subject
Date: 2012-08-23 01:55 am (UTC)Steve laughed. "Yes, I've been thawed enough. Sometimes, I feel like I'm still frozen in time, since so many things have changed in this world, but it's more familiar to me than I'm sure it is for you and Thor. Or Loki. Not that he's probably giving Earth much of a chance, anyway."
"I'm sure Thor appreciates you being here. The whole Loki situation must weigh greatly on him, and he barely knows us, so I don't know if he trusts our offers to help or listen as much as he would yours." Steve smiled. "Swords and daggers, huh? I use a shield or my fists, usually, but swords look like fun."

Date: 2012-08-23 02:18 am (UTC)Sif's brows raised when Steve hinted that he'd been frozen for longer than she'd thought. "Worlds can become unrecognizable with enough time," she said with a pang of sympathy, "mortals don't get to really see that the way you did." Her mouth twisted wryly. "As far as what Loki wants with Earth, your guess is as good as mine."
"We've known each other all our lives," Sif agreed, "but if Thor doesn't seem to open up much, it's usually because he doesn't always know he needs to." She grinned. "We can spar sometime, if you like. I'm good with my fists, too, or I can show you how fun swords are."

Date: 2012-08-23 02:30 am (UTC)Steve nodded. "Seventy years, nearly, so a lot of things aren't the same. Yet some things are, both good and bad. Does it get better, not being mortal and watching things change with time?" He wasn't sure yet what his actual mortality was, and it wasn't like he planned to ask S.H.I.E.L.D. to perform experiments on him. He had a feeling that it would take a lot to kill him, if anything even could, and that was enough to cause hesitation in thinking beyond that.
"Did you grow up together then? Or were you sweethearts?" Steve assumed they were friends because he'd heard something about Thor being involved with a mortal scientist, but Thor had also said dinner parties in Asgard usually involved nudity and sexual relations, so he wasn't sure what was even normal on Asgard. "Sparring is good. I like to box, but I'd be interested in learning your ways with a sword."
no subject
Date: 2012-08-23 03:01 am (UTC)"Yes, but it must be easier watching the world change slowly. I don't think it was that way for you," she said quietly, and it occurred to her that he had probably lost a lot of people in all that time, another thing she hadn't had to deal with. She'd lost loved ones abruptly in battle, but waking up to find them gone was another thing entirely. "I'm sorry."
"Sweethearts? That's quite a word," Sif smiled over it, "but no, not really, if you mean a bethrothal. We're...just friends." It was kind of a mouthful to get into a millennia worth of complexities. "I'll show you sometime, if we can box too. I haven't boxed or wrestled seriously since I was much younger."

Date: 2012-08-23 03:31 am (UTC)"The beach is good. Coney Island, it has some rides and ocean for swimming. You can even reach it by train. I can show you sometime, if you want." Steve smiled and thought that Clint and the others might enjoy a trip to the beach. At her words, he reached over to squeeze her shoulder. "Thank you."
Steve nodded. "Sweethearts is similar to bethrothal. Friends is good, though. Everyone needs friends, especially ones who are willing to come to an alien world to support you during your brother's rehabilitation." He got the diced veggies from her and tossed the onions in with the spam he was frying. He'd add the tomatoes last so they didn't get too cooked.

Date: 2012-08-23 03:58 am (UTC)"Thor would do the same for me, if my brother ever decided to randomly try to raze a planet," she said, passing over the vegetables. "Although mine isn't the interfering type. That's starting to smell good. What kind of meat is this SPAM, anyway?"
no subject
Date: 2012-08-23 10:52 pm (UTC)"What type is your brother? I'm glad there aren't two Asgardians wanting to raze Earth, at least." He laughed. "I don't rightly know what kind of meat it is. It's probably better if we try not to figure that out. Just eat it and enjoy it is my general philosophy when it comes to food."
no subject
Date: 2012-08-23 11:55 pm (UTC)"Heimdall? He's...the hard to talk to type," Sif decided, but she was smiling a little as she leaned in to sniff the pot. "Good listener, though. And no, we Asgardians aren't all bad, most of the time. Thor's quite cuddly in fact."
no subject
Date: 2012-08-24 12:08 am (UTC)Steve smiled. "Listening is good. It's funny. I don't usually talk that much, you know? I prefer to listen and speak when I have something to say. But I've been talking more since I thawed out than I think I said in twenty-five years previously." He snorted. "I think I'll leave Thor cuddling to others."
no subject
Date: 2012-08-24 12:19 am (UTC)She raised a brow. "I'd never have guessed you didn't like to talk, but you do seem thoughtful. Thoughtful people don't buy gifts for a houseful of people while they're out at the beach," she pointed out. "I like to talk, silence makes me anxious. Too many years of fighting alongside men and trying to keep up with their foul mouths. I've got quite a mouth of my own now." She laughed. "I won't tell Thor you aren't interested in cuddling. It would make him very sad."

Date: 2012-08-24 12:38 am (UTC)Steve finished frying everything and dumped the pan's contents onto two plates. He then got the mac n cheese and scooped it out to join the rest. Once everything was together, he stirred stuff up and opened the bag of Fritos. Pouring some onto each plate, he finished and made sure he hadn't forgotten anything. "Looks like it's done. The chips add a nice crunch," he said, handing her a plate. "There's nothing wrong with a foul mouth, and, yeah, don't mention cuddling to Thor. I wouldn't want to make him sad." He got a can of pop out of the fridge and walked over to sit down. Lunch looked real good.
